What We Learned From The Trailer For Star Trek Prodigy

So, have you guys seen it yet? The trailer for Star Trek: Prodigy? I swear, I nearly spilled my coffee. Like, a lot of coffee. It’s got me all hyped up, and I just had to chat about it with you all. You know me, always ready for a new Trek adventure, right?
First off, the animation. Wowza. It’s not quite live-action, but it’s so much more than what we’re used to from the animated Trek shows. It’s got this really polished, almost cinematic feel. Think Lower Decks but with a bigger budget and, dare I say, a little more… grit? It’s definitely a fresh take, and I’m digging it. It looks pretty, you know? Really pretty.
And the characters! Oh my gosh, the characters. We got a whole crew of young’uns, all sort of misfits, right? They stumble upon this derelict starship, the USS Protostar. How cool is that name? Protostar. Sounds so promising. So, they find this ship, and suddenly they're in over their heads. Classic Trek, but with a whole new generation. It’s like they’re the accidental Starfleet recruits. Whoops!
Must Read
We’ve got Gwyn, this alien chick with a serious attitude. She looks like she can handle herself, which is always a good thing in space. And Rok-Tahk! A big, hairy… well, whatever she is. She seems super strong and maybe a little bit misunderstood. I’m already rooting for her. We all love a gentle giant, don’t we? Especially one that can probably punch a hole in a Klingon bird-of-prey. Just sayin'.
Then there's Dal. He seems like the reluctant leader. A bit of a scamp, maybe? He’s got that whole “I’m just trying to survive” vibe, but you can tell he’s got a good heart somewhere in there. We’ll see if he steps up, won’t we? I’m betting he does. Every good story needs a guy who’s a little bit of a rogue but ends up doing the right thing. It’s practically a law of the universe, especially in space.
And Zero! A Medusan. Now, if you’re a hardcore Trek fan, you’ll know what that means. Medusans can’t be seen without causing madness. So, Zero is in some kind of containment suit. That’s fascinating! How are they going to handle that? This is the kind of sci-fi nerdiness I live for. It’s not just cool aliens; it’s aliens with actual implications. Who knew we’d be talking about existential dread and cosmic horror in a kid’s show? Well, a show for kids, but also for us old farts who grew up on this stuff.

Murf. He’s… well, Murf. He’s a blob. A cute, weird blob. What does he do? Does he eat things? Does he have special powers? The trailer doesn’t give much away, but he’s definitely got personality. I’m picturing him as the ship’s pet, or maybe the comic relief. Or, you know, the secret weapon. You never know with these alien blobs, do you?
And Janeway! Hologram Janeway! Okay, now we’re talking. It’s a holographic training hologram, apparently. So, she’s not actually there, which is a little sad, but still! It’s Kate Mulgrew’s voice! Her iconic voice! Guiding these new kids. It’s like a passing of the torch. She’s their mentor. Imagine learning from Captain Janeway. That’s pretty epic, even if she’s just a bunch of pixels and code.
The trailer hints at them having to learn how to be Starfleet. They don’t know the rules, they don’t know the technology. They’re figuring it out as they go. It feels so relatable, doesn’t it? Like when you start a new job, and you’re just fumbling around, trying not to break anything. Except, you know, they’re in space and have phasers. A bit higher stakes.
There’s this whole element of them being fugitives, too. They’re running from something, or someone. What’s the deal? The trailer shows them getting chased by some pretty menacing-looking ships. Not exactly the friendly Federation anymore, is it? It hints at a darker underbelly to the galaxy, which I’m totally here for. It’s not all cuddles and exploring nebulae. Sometimes it’s lasers and running for your life.

The USS Protostar itself is a mystery. It’s a Federation ship, but it’s abandoned. How did it get there? And why is it so advanced? It looks sleek, but also a bit… experimental. Maybe it’s a new class of ship? Or maybe it’s a lost prototype. The possibilities are endless, and that’s what makes Trek so fun. The unknown. The sheer, delightful unknown.
And the references! Oh, the Trek references! I caught little nods to other shows and movies. There’s that classic transporter beam sound effect. The phaser sounds. Even the way they talk about “warp speed.” It’s like a love letter to the entire franchise. They’re not just making a new show; they’re celebrating everything that came before. That’s so important, I think. Honoring the legacy.
The trailer also showed us glimpses of some cool alien worlds. Lush, vibrant planets. And some not-so-lush, dangerous-looking ones. You know, the usual Trek tour of the galaxy. But the animation makes them look so inviting, even the dangerous ones. I want to visit them all, even if I’ll probably need a hazmat suit and a phaser set to stun.
There’s a definite sense of adventure, of exploration. That’s the core of Star Trek, right? The desire to see what’s out there. These kids, who are essentially outcasts, finding a ship that can take them anywhere. It’s the ultimate escape. It’s the dream, personified. Or, ship-ified, I guess.

I’m really interested to see how the dynamic between the crew develops. They’re all so different. They’re going to clash, they’re going to learn from each other, and hopefully, they’ll become a family. That’s what Starfleet crews often become, don’t they? A found family in the vacuum of space. It’s a beautiful thing.
The trailer also gave us a peek at some potential villains. There were these shadowy figures, and those aggressive-looking ships I mentioned. It looks like they’re going to face some real threats. It’s not going to be all smooth sailing. And that’s good! A little conflict makes the victories that much sweeter. And the character development so much more believable.
I’m also excited about the educational aspect. Prodigy is aimed at a younger audience, but I know we’ll all learn something. Whether it’s about science, about teamwork, or about empathy, Trek always has a lesson. And seeing it through the eyes of these kids will be a unique way to experience it. It’s like getting a refresher course on all the things we loved about Trek.
The humor seems to be there, too. Little quips and witty remarks. It’s not going to be super dark, despite the potential threats. It feels like it’s going to strike a good balance between serious stakes and lighthearted fun. Because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good space pun? I know I do.

The presence of Hologram Janeway is a masterstroke. It allows for exposition and guidance without breaking the premise of these kids being new to the Federation. It’s a clever way to bring in a beloved character and a piece of Trek history. I can just imagine her sighing and saying, “Oh, for goodness sake, Dal, did you have to touch that glowing button?”
Honestly, the trailer left me with so many questions. Who are these kids? Where did they come from? What happened to the original crew of the Protostar? And who are they running from? The mystery is delicious. It’s the kind of hook that keeps you coming back for more, episode after episode. It’s the good stuff.
But the overall feeling I got was one of hope. Despite the dangers, despite the uncertainty, these kids are embarking on something amazing. They’re finding their place in the galaxy, and they’re going to do it their own way. It’s about finding your courage, finding your crew, and finding your destiny. Even if your destiny involves accidentally piloting a starship.
So yeah, the trailer for Star Trek: Prodigy? It’s a big, fat, enthusiastic thumbs up from me. I’m already counting down the days. Are you guys as excited as I am? Let me know what you think! We’ve got a whole new adventure waiting for us, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us. Live long and prosper, my fellow Trekkies!
