August is here, and that means something special for a certain group of us. It’s the thirtieth anniversary of The Monster Squad. Yes, that’s right. Thirty years. This movie, released in 1987, is now officially vintage. And you know what that means? We’re old. Or at least, we feel older just thinking about it.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. “The Monster Squad? Isn’t that that cheesy movie with the monsters?” And to those people, I say… you’re not entirely wrong. It is a little cheesy. It does have the monsters. But that’s part of its charm, isn’t it? It’s not trying to be some super serious, Oscar-bait horror film. It’s just a bunch of kids trying to save the world from a group of classic movie monsters. And honestly, sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Let’s be honest, Hollywood has a way of messing with beloved characters. Sometimes they make them too dark, too gritty, or just plain unrecognizable. But The Monster Squad? They mostly got it right. You have Dracula, looking as dapper and evil as ever. You have the Wolfman, all hairy and growly. And of course, there’s Frankenstein’s monster, who is surprisingly sympathetic in this one. We even get the mummy and the Gill-man, because why not?
The premise is simple. The monsters, led by Dracula, are trying to find an amulet. If they get it, they can unleash eternal darkness. Because, you know, that’s what monsters do. They want eternal darkness. It’s a whole thing. And who stands in their way? A group of pre-teen kids who are obsessed with monsters. They call themselves The Monster Squad. It’s a name that screams "we might get eaten," but also "we are totally going to fight back."
The kids in the movie are… well, they’re kids. They’re not polished actors. They’re a little awkward, a little loud, and a lot brave. There’s the leader, a kid named Sean, who’s super into monsters. Then there’s his best friend, Eddie, who’s kind of the comic relief. And then there’s the rest of the squad. They’re not exactly the Avengers, but they have heart. And in a pinch, they’ve got some pretty good ideas.

One of my favorite parts of the movie is how the monsters are portrayed. They’re not just mindless beasts. They have dialogue. They have plans. Dracula, played by the legendary Duncan Regehr, is particularly menacing. He’s got that classic Count Dracula vibe down pat. And the Wolfman, played by Carl Thibault, is just… so wolfman-y. You believe he’s going to rip your face off. And that’s a good thing for a monster movie.
But then there’s Frankenstein’s monster, played by Tom Noonan. This monster is different. He’s not really evil. He’s more… misunderstood. He gets tangled up in the whole plot, and you actually feel a little sorry for him. It’s a nice touch that adds a layer to the whole monster mayhem.

And let’s not forget the other monsters. The mummy, Michael MacRae, is suitably ancient and dusty. And the Gill-man, Brion James, looks like he just crawled out of a swamp. They’re all here, ready to cause some trouble. It’s like a monster convention gone wrong.
The great thing about The Monster Squad is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It knows it's a fun, campy movie. And it leans into that. It's full of memorable lines and hilarious moments. Like when the Wolfman tries to explain what a werewolf is to a group of confused kids. Or when Dracula is utterly baffled by modern technology.

Some people might call it a B-movie. They might say it’s silly. And maybe, just maybe, they’re right. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that The Monster Squad is actually a great movie. Unpopular opinion, I know. But hear me out.
It captured the imagination of a generation. It introduced a new audience to classic movie monsters. And it did it with humor, heart, and a healthy dose of monster-y goodness. It’s the kind of movie that sticks with you. You remember the jokes. You remember the scares. You remember the feeling of watching it with friends, maybe huddled under a blanket, a little bit scared but mostly just having fun.
So, as The Monster Squad hits its big 3-0, let’s take a moment to celebrate it. Let’s embrace the cheese. Let’s appreciate the monsters. And let’s remember that sometimes, the best stories are the ones that don’t try to be perfect. They’re the ones that are just plain fun. Happy anniversary, Monster Squad. Thanks for the memories. And don’t worry, we’re still not letting the monsters win. Not on our watch.
