Stargate Universe 2 09 Visitation Review

Stargate Universe 2 09 Visitation Review

Okay, so, Stargate Universe, right? We're talking season 2, episode 9, "Visitation." Grab your coffee, because this one was a doozy. Seriously, a real doozy.

Remember how things were getting, like, super tense on the Destiny? Like, everybody's crammed together, supplies are dwindling, and the existential dread is practically a fifth crew member. Yeah, that kind of tense. And then, BAM! This episode hits us.

So, what’s the deal with "Visitation"? Well, it's all about… well, visitors. Shocking, I know. But these aren't just any random alien tourists. Oh no. These are the original builders of the Stargate network. Pretty big deal, huh?

They show up, all mysterious and ethereal, looking like they just stepped out of a cosmic art installation. Seriously, their fashion sense was… out of this world. Get it? Okay, I'll stop with the puns. Maybe. No promises.

The crew is, understandably, freaking out. Like, "What is happening?!" kind of freaking out. And honestly, who wouldn't be? You're on a spaceship light-years from home, and suddenly, the universe's architects drop by for a chat. Talk about an unexpected housewarming party.

These guys, the "Ancients" as they're often called (though in this episode, they’re a bit more… advanced than what we’ve seen before), they’re not exactly chatty. They're more like observers. Philosophers. Cosmic grandpas with a lot of wisdom to impart, if you can decipher their cryptic pronouncements.

And that’s where the real meat of the episode is, isn’t it? It's not about laser battles and dramatic escapes (though there’s a little of that). It’s about the meaning of it all. Why build this massive, universe-spanning network? What was their ultimate goal?

One of the coolest parts, for me anyway, was seeing how the crew reacts. You've got your hardened military types, your skeptical scientists, your… well, everyone’s just trying to wrap their heads around it. It’s like a collective existential crisis, broadcast live across the galaxy. No pressure, right?

Eli Wallace, bless his nerdy heart, is just eating it up. He’s the one asking all the questions we’re dying to ask. "So, like, why all the gates? Was it a commuter system? A galactic highway? Did they have rush hour back then?" I can just picture him, scribbling notes furiously, probably wearing his signature slightly-too-big t-shirt.

Then there’s Colonel Young. He’s the stoic leader, trying to maintain control in a situation that’s totally, utterly out of his control. He’s got that furrowed brow going, that "what in the actual galaxy am I supposed to do now?" look. He's probably wishing he'd paid more attention in philosophy class.

And Chloe Armstrong. She’s always been the one struggling to find her place, and this episode really throws her into the deep end. She’s getting these… visions. These glimpses into the Ancients’ minds. It’s like she’s plugged directly into the cosmic mainframe. Talk about a promotion she didn’t see coming.

The Ancients themselves, they’re not exactly here to hand out Christmas presents. They’re more interested in the journey. They built the gates, they set things in motion, and now they’re just… watching. It’s like they built a ridiculously complicated board game and are now observing the players. And the players are us. On the Destiny. With questionable snacks.

They talk about destiny. Of course they do. It's the name of the ship, for crying out loud. But they don’t mean it in a preordained, no-free-will kind of way. It’s more about the path, the journey, the choices you make along the way. Pretty heavy stuff for a Tuesday afternoon, wouldn’t you say?

The episode really makes you think about what we're doing out there. Are we just along for the ride? Are we meant to achieve something specific? Or are we just… exploring? It’s the eternal Stargate question, wrapped up in a neat little package with a bow made of ancient cosmic energy.

There’s a moment where they show us, or at least hint at, the sheer scale of the network. It’s mind-boggling. Galaxies upon galaxies, all connected. It makes you feel incredibly small and yet, somehow, incredibly significant. We’re part of something so much bigger than ourselves, you know?

And the technology! Oh, the technology. The Ancients are just… on another level. Their understanding of physics, of energy, of the universe itself. It’s like comparing a flip phone to a quantum supercomputer. And the Destiny crew are still trying to figure out how to fix the leaky faucet in the mess hall.

The dialogue with the Ancients is deliberately vague. They don't give straight answers. They give riddles. They give metaphors. They give us more questions than they do answers. Which, to be fair, is pretty much how life works, right? We spend our whole lives trying to figure it all out.

It’s also a really interesting character study for the crew. We see how they cope with the unknown, with overwhelming power, with the possibility of a cosmic plan. It pushes them to their limits. It forces them to confront their own beliefs and their own fears.

There's a scene where one of the Ancients basically says, "You're all so… busy." And you're like, "Yeah, buddy, we're trying to survive! We're not exactly on vacation in the Andromeda galaxy!" But then you realize, maybe they're right. Maybe we get so caught up in the day-to-day struggles that we forget to look up at the stars and appreciate the bigger picture.

And the visual effects! My word. These beings, their ships, the way they interact with the Destiny… it’s just stunning. They’re not your typical little green men, that’s for sure. They’re something more primal, more fundamental. Like living ideas, or energy made manifest.

The episode raises a crucial question: are we worthy? Are we ready to inherit this incredible legacy? Are we going to mess it all up, like so many civilizations before us? It's a lot to think about. A lot.

And then there's the whole aspect of "purpose." The Ancients built the network for a reason. To guide, to observe, to… what? It’s the million-dollar question. Or rather, the multi-trillion-light-year question.

This episode really cemented the idea that Stargate Universe wasn't just about exploring space. It was about exploring humanity. Our resilience, our flaws, our capacity for wonder. And our ability to get into trouble no matter how advanced the technology around us.

By the end of it, you're left feeling… contemplative. A little bit awestruck. And maybe a tiny bit terrified. Because if the Ancients are watching, and if they built all this, what does that say about us?

It’s an episode that sticks with you, you know? It’s not just a plot device; it’s a philosophical statement. It’s the show asking us, the viewers, to ponder our own place in the universe. And that’s pretty darn cool, if you ask me. So, yeah, "Visitation." Definitely a standout. Even if it left me with more questions than answers. Which, I guess, is kind of the point.
