Okay, let's talk about Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Yes, that's the sequel to the movie where Sonic was… well, Sonic. He's the blue blur, the fast one, the one who collects rings. It was a fun movie, a bit silly, and surprisingly charming. So, when the sequel rolled around, I had some… feelings.
Now, before you all get your quills in a twist, hear me out. I liked the first Sonic movie. It was good, honest popcorn fun. Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik? Pure gold. He chewed scenery like it was a chili dog. So, my expectations for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 were set on "even more of that good stuff."
And for the most part, it delivered! We got more Sonic, more Tom and Maddie, and of course, more of that delightful maniac, Dr. Robotnik. But there was something about the pacing, or maybe the sheer amount of stuff happening, that made me pause. It was a LOT.
The introduction of Tails was, of course, a highlight. Who doesn't love a two-tailed fox with engineering genius? He's adorable. And seeing him interact with Sonic felt right. Their banter was great, and the idea of them as a team was instantly appealing. It’s like peanut butter and jelly, but with more speed and whirring propellers.
Then came Knuckles. Ah, Knuckles. The muscle. The grumpy one. He’s supposed to be the guardian of the Master Emerald, a serious character with a serious mission. And, bless his red, spiky heart, he takes himself very seriously indeed.
This is where my "unpopular opinion" might start to creep in. While Knuckles is a vital part of the Sonic universe, and Idris Elba did a fantastic job voicing him, I found him… a little bit too much. He was constantly angry, constantly punching things, and constantly on the verge of exploding. It was a lot of intensity.

I mean, I get it. He’s a warrior. He’s been tricked. He’s on a quest for vengeance. But sometimes, I just wanted to tell him, "Hey, buddy, take a breath. Have a ring. Maybe a nice cup of tea?" It felt like a one-note performance, even though it was a well-executed note. It was the same note, over and over.
Meanwhile, Dr. Robotnik was still being his glorious, eccentric self. Jim Carrey truly shines as this character. He's unhinged, he's creative with his evil plans, and he’s genuinely funny. His interactions with Knuckles were some of the best parts of the movie, a hilarious odd couple dynamic. He’s the chaotic energy the film needed.
The plot itself was a bit of a whirlwind. They were looking for the Master Emerald, fighting bad guys, and trying to save the world. All standard superhero-ish stuff. But with Sonic, it’s supposed to be fun and fast. And this movie was certainly fast.
Movie Review: Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Perhaps too fast? Sometimes, I felt like I was on a roller coaster, and I just wanted to get off for a minute to admire the view. The emotional beats, like Tom and Maddie dealing with their own issues, felt a little rushed. I wanted to spend more time with them, to feel their connection to Sonic.
And the action sequences! They were big, they were loud, they were full of CGI. Which is fine! That’s what you expect from a Sonic movie. But the sheer volume of explosions and near-death experiences was… a lot to process. It was a constant barrage of "OMG, will they make it?!"
I found myself wishing for more moments of quiet. More character interaction that wasn't about punching or running. More of the subtle humor that made the first movie work so well.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Movie Review
It's like ordering a giant buffet. You have all the delicious options, but sometimes you wish you could just have a really good, simple sandwich. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the ultimate buffet. It had everything a fan could ask for, but perhaps too much of it.
The ending, of course, set up more adventures. Which I’m sure I’ll watch. Because, despite my minor grumbles, I do love Sonic. I love the characters. I love the world they’ve created. It’s pure, unadulterated fun, even when it’s a little overwhelming.
My personal preference might lean towards slightly slower pacing. More breathing room for the characters to just be. To have a conversation that isn't interrupted by a giant robot. To see Sonic contemplate the meaning of life, or at least the best flavor of chili dog.
Movie Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - TVovermind
But hey, this is just me. The movie was a massive hit, and for good reason. It’s got action, it’s got laughs, and it’s got that beloved blue hedgehog. If you want a high-octane thrill ride with plenty of explosions and memorable characters, this is definitely the movie for you.
I just hope, for the sake of my sanity (and Knuckles' blood pressure), that the next installment allows for a few more pit stops on the road to saving the world. Maybe a scenic route? With a picnic?
Either way, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a fun ride. It’s chaotic, it’s energetic, and it’s a whole lot of blue, fast-moving, ring-collecting action. Just be prepared to hold on tight.
