10 Historic Movies That Weren T Historic

10 Historic Movies That Weren T Historic

You know those big, epic movies about history? The ones with the sweeping costumes, the dramatic speeches, and the feeling that you’re learning something super important? Well, sometimes, even though they look like they’re straight out of the history books, they’re actually a little… creative with the truth. Don’t get me wrong, these movies are often brilliant, entertaining, and even inspiring. But if you’re looking for a perfect history lesson, you might want to take them with a grain of historical salt! Here are 10 historic movies that weren't quite as historic as they seemed:

It's amazing how a little bit of Hollywood magic can transform the past into something even more spectacular!

Let’s start with a classic: Braveheart. We all love Mel Gibson as the fierce Scottish warrior William Wallace. He’s rallying the troops, he’s fighting for freedom, and he’s sporting that iconic blue face paint. The problem? William Wallace probably didn’t wear face paint, and some of the battles and even the famous romance with Princess Isabella are a bit… embellished. Still, it’s a powerhouse of a film that makes you want to charge into battle for a good cause!

Then there’s Gladiator. Russell Crowe is the wronged general Maximus, forced into gladiator combat and seeking revenge against the evil Emperor Commodus. It’s incredibly compelling! But in reality, Emperor Commodus was more likely murdered by his wrestling partner than facing off against a fictional general in the Colosseum. The film also invents a whole backstory for Maximus, which, while great for the drama, isn’t rooted in historical fact.

Speaking of emperors, 300 takes us to the epic Battle of Thermopylae with King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans. The visuals are stunning, and the battles are incredibly stylized. However, the historical record suggests the Spartans weren’t quite as universally shredded as the actors, and the film leans heavily on a comic book’s interpretation of events rather than strict accuracy. Still, who can forget those slow-motion kicks?

Moving on to royalty, Elizabeth, starring Cate Blanchett, is a captivating look at the early reign of Queen Elizabeth I. While Blanchett is phenomenal, the film takes some liberties with the timeline of events and even the relationships Elizabeth had. For instance, her supposed romance with Robert Dudley is played up significantly more than the historical evidence supports. But it certainly paints a vivid picture of a young queen finding her feet.

Let’s talk about The Duchess. Keira Knightley plays the famously fashionable and influential Georgiana Cavendish. The movie highlights her difficult marriage and her involvement in politics. While Georgiana was indeed a trendsetter and an activist, the film condenses years of her life and simplifies some of the complex relationships and political machinations. It’s a beautiful film, though, showcasing a woman ahead of her time.

Then we have Marie Antoinette, directed by Sofia Coppola. With its modern soundtrack and lavish costumes, it offers a very unique take on the infamous queen. It’s less about the French Revolution’s political build-up and more about the isolation and extravagance of her life at Versailles. While the opulent parties and fashion are certainly a highlight, the film focuses more on her personal experience than a factual, chronological account of her reign or downfall.

Consider The Patriot. This one stars Mel Gibson again, this time as a reluctant farmer drawn into the American Revolutionary War. It’s a stirring tale of revenge and patriotism. However, many historians point out that the film depicts the British as overly brutal and introduces fictional characters and events that, while dramatically effective, don't align with the historical narrative. It’s a good old-fashioned war movie, just not a documentary.

Lincoln is a film that many people consider very accurate. And it is remarkably detailed in its depiction of the political maneuvering to pass the 13th Amendment. However, even in a film lauded for its accuracy, there are still artistic choices. The film focuses intensely on Abraham Lincoln’s personal life and his relationships with his family, which, while interesting, sometimes overshadows the broader political landscape of the time. Also, some of the characters were composites or invented to serve the narrative.

Let’s not forget Troy. This epic film gives us the story of the Trojan War, with Brad Pitt as the mighty Achilles. The scale is immense, and the fights are thrilling. The main issue? The Trojan War itself is considered more of a legend than a strictly historical event. The film also takes significant creative license with the characters and their motivations, blending myth with a touch of Hollywood drama.

Finally, Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Picking up where the first film left off, this sequel follows Cate Blanchett as an older Queen Elizabeth I dealing with threats from King Philip II of Spain and the Spanish Armada. While it captures the era’s grandeur, the film significantly alters the timeline and dramatizes certain events, particularly concerning the relationship between Elizabeth and Sir Walter Raleigh. It’s a visual feast, but a historian might raise an eyebrow or two.

These movies remind us that history, when brought to the screen, often becomes a story designed to entertain and move us. They might not be perfect textbooks, but they offer incredible characters, unforgettable moments, and a fantastic gateway into the past, even if the details are a little fuzzy around the edges. And isn’t that part of the fun?
